Lovely story! It conveys a lot in a short space.

That's a great Borderlands story. Evocative and elegant.

Love this! Very intriguing. Please tell me this is the start of a novel! :-)

Actually, there is a sort of novel brewing, but I'm not sure if I can make it all come together right--but thanks for asking, and for commenting on the story! (Asakiyume=Francesca)

That would be good. As a stand alone it's interesting for a moment, but not overly memorable. But it clearly has potential (clearly to me, anyway) to be a considerably more interesting piece at novella or longer length.

Well here's hoping! I'll work to make it happen.

This was WONDERFUL -- I just wish it hadn't stopped there! The border comes rolling in like the shadow of a cloud moving across the land. It feels like the air before a thunderstorm, and it smells like sweet fern.... So gorgeous.
Reading the comments, I am VERY glad you've said there's a novel, because I would love to read it. I want to know more about this mother and her many children, more about the bargain she made with the river! Utterly lovely, Francesca.

So glad you liked the story! Yes, it is short... but there will, God willing, eventually be more.
