I really enjoyed this story and found it affected me in an odd way. In some spots I had questions and was even a bit confused, but in the end I realized that it didn't matter whether I ended up with all the answers as the narrator only knew so much. And the image of the children with blankets over them, like furniture left behind in summer houses, covered in dust sheets. Haunting.

I loved this story--in fact, it was to comment on this story that I joined the forums. It really achieved alien-ness for me, and yet a kind of intimacy, too. The notion of going in and coming out--we can sort of get it, by analogy with sleeping, or with dormancy, or with metamorphosis, but it's still strange and different as told here. And I loved the notion of communicating with the rocks and the vines as well as with the animal/humanlike creatures. Really wonderful.
